Women from minority ethnic communities can feel judged, shamed and discriminated against due to staff in mainstream services lacking an understanding of their experiences and cultural practices.

Lack of trauma-informed language, translation and interpretation services is a significant barrier for minority ethnic women and girls accessing advice and support for VAWG.

Women and girls fleeing crisis in their home countries are at high risk of being trafficked, and are also vulnerable to experiencing other forms of VAWG.

VAWG is one of the most prevalent traumatic experiences. There is strong evidence highlighting the negative effects of VAWG on mental health and wellbeing.

A key aim of Equally Safe is to ensure the voices of women, children and young people with lived experience of VAWG to shape policy and practice.

Organisations may face challenges and barriers embedding lived experience of VAWG into their systems in ways which are safe, meaningful and trauma-informed.

Gender inequality is the root cause of VAWG.

The lack of gender balance and women’s underrepresentation in many sectors, including politics and decision-making roles, contribute to gender inequality persisting in Scotland.

Violence against women and girls and gender inequality harms everyone in society, including men and boys.

Gender norms place expectations on men and boys to meet unhealthy and impossible standards of masculinity, and men face additional risks as a result.

Fifty years ago, there were no refuges, no helplines, no women’s workers, and no children’s programs.

It was legal for a man to rape his wife. Women weren’t allowed mortgages or bank loans without a male co-signer, and women were forced out of public sector jobs if they married. Scotland’s leaders were overwhelmingly male and pale, and domestic abuse was firmly in the “it’s just a domestic” box.

For nearly 50 years, we’ve worked with others to influence and campaign for the rights and the safety of women and children affected by domestic abuse in Scotland, and we have made progress.

💜 Scotland’s Domestic Abuse and Forced Marriage Helpline now supports thousands of people across Scotland.
💜 Coercive control is now a criminal offence under the Domestic Abuse (Scotland) Act 2018.
💜 Women, children and young people across Scotland have been supported by programmes on justice, housing, debt, child contact, and digital abuse.
💜 An increasing number of professionals are now trained in the dynamics of domestic abuse and trauma-informed response.
💜 Local Women’s Aid groups remain the backbone of the movement, supporting women, children and young people to find safety, regain control, and rebuild their lives - even as demand increases and funding decreases.

The work is not done. Our new Strategic Plan sets our sights on a Scotland with no domestic abuse and is launching today.

Watch this space. 💜💜💜
